Madonna's Rebel Heart Review

Jan 11th, 2015

Madonna is releasing her Rebel Heart album soon.  I've heard some of the demos and here is a my thoughts on a few of the new songs.

Addicted (The One That Got Away)
I like this song.  It starts out slow with a rock groove, then picks up for the chorus and is slow again.  It sounds good in demo form but isn’t single quality yet but it has potential.  I like the chorus and the instrumentation during the chorus.  “I’m addicted; I’m addicted to the one that got away.”

Arioso
OK this song is so slow.  The instrumentation is fine as a new age song with no vocals – I can appreciate it better that way.  The song sounds like a demo from the Ray of Light album.  It sounds a bit along the lines of Ray of Light meets Candy Perfume Girl meets Little Star.  I’m guessing William Orbit was behind this song.  The lyrics don’t stand out too much and I don’t think it would have made much of an impact on the album but it was nice to hear Madonna’s creative process.  I do like the humming at the end of the song.

Back That Up (Do it)
Not knowing anything about this song, it would be easy to identify it was recorded for the Hard Candy sessions. It definitely sounds like a current pop/r&b song that would appear on an album so it had to have been recorded sometime in the 4 or 5 years.  The groove is infectious, the chorus “do it, do it” is catchy.  The lyrics are a little soft though so I couldn’t see this being a single but I don’t understand why it was left off the Hard Candy album.

Beautiful Scars
“Just take me with all my stupid flaws”- Madonna starts the song off honestly.  It’s a slower song and you know I’m not a big fan of slower music.  This song is an exception.  I like the music instrumentation and the lyrics on this song. Even in a demo form it has a raw beauty to it that is appealing.  “With all my beautiful scars. With all my beautiful scars. Love me with all of my flaws. My beautiful scars.”  It’s definitely album material and I would love to hear a finalized version.

Best Night
“You can call me M tonight” – Yes! Yes! The song starts out on a high note and finishes on one too. This song is a total baby-making song.  The demo is very hip, has a great groove and some awesome lyrics. “I’ll make this the best night of your life.”  Madonna even quotes lyrics from “Justify My Love” in the song and it’s a perfect fit.  It’s a great reminder for those who grew up in the 80’s-90’s that Madonna is still the queen.  It’s an awesome song even in demo form and must be included on the album!

Bitch I’m Madonna
This song is damn catchy.  I love love the music.  The bass is serious – the instrumentation sounds cutting edge and is hard to forget.  The lyrics are also catchy.  Oh and that’s just the demo that leaked which already sounds like it was single-ready.  I especially like the music at the end and Madonna screaming “Who do you think you are?”  The only thing that might have made it better was a cameo by Nicki Minaj to fill in some of the space between the lyrics.  The final version was one of the 6 songs Madonna released to iTunes for her “Rebel Heart” album.  It sounds very close to the previous version that leaked but has more bass and of course a rap from Nicki.  I would be surprised if this song isn’t a single.  It definitely should be.  It’s ready for radio.  It’s some of Madonna’s best work recently.
